58 of this golf club’s full members are children
A Northumberland golf club has been singled out for praise for its work in introducing children to golf.
Rothbury Golf Club now has 58 children who either play regularly or are full members.
The club’s two junior organisers, Valerie Hope and Eileen Clark, have, since 2002, offered coaching sessions in local schools, and invited schools to participate in golf festivals designed for children at the club or attend ‘Welcome Nights’ where the youngsters took part in fun activities.
Thursday evenings have been devoted to ‘Tri-Golf’ sessions for younger beginners plus an hour of coaching for those who were ready to use real clubs. Monday nights have included professional coaching and the opportunity to play on the course for more experienced juniors, and there have been regular competitions for all levels including matches with other clubs.
The club has been awarded GolfMark status, been accepted as an HSBC Golf Centre and received a Golf Foundation grant for its work in introducing golf to children, and England Golf has promoted the work the club has done on social media.
“We are delighted at the increased numbers of youngsters who are coming to our club on a regular basis and it has been a joy to see their enthusiasm, enjoyment and progress. Support from the Golf Foundation has been invaluable in helping to make this possible,” said Valerie Hope and Eileen Clark in a joint statement.
