At least one golf course was destroyed in last week’s UK tidal surge.

Eastern and western parts of the UK were flooded in Britain’s worst tidal surge for more than 60 years last week, and now it has emerged that at least one golf course was among the thousands of homes that were flooded.

Championship Adventure Golf in Merseyside, an adventure golf course that only opened this March, was covered in more than 1.6 million gallons of water.

The course will be closed until February and plans to build a new course next to it have been put on hold.

“It was just unbelievable. I could not imagine in my worst dreams what was happening,” said owner Nick Ashfield.

“There is about 1.6 million gallons of water that needs to be pumped out. It looks more like a swimming pool rather than a golf course.

“I started to see the water coming over the road but just couldn’t image that it was going to do that and then it came down the hill and across the grass.
We have only been open for eight months – it is the worst news to be honest.”

“We are going to have to completely refurbish the first course. You can just about see the flag poles now so we are getting there but I’m sure there is going to be a lot of rubbish and damage once the water has cleared but I’m sure it isn’t terminal. We will come back shiny and new for next year.”

Nick has been updating customers with developments on social media – and has been praised for the sense of humour he has shown.

Updates have included: “Who’s up for some duck racing tomorrow?”, “Today’s update. Water 80% gone. Silt City! Thrown a couple of dolphins back. Holes 5 to 9 took the brunt and need rebuilding. The rest less damage” and “Our 9th green is wetter than an otter’s pocket.”

The devastation even led to the shadow leader of the House of Commons, Merseyside MP Angela Eagle, tweeting about how sad she was to see the course submerged under water.
