Nine in ten members of British golf clubs have said they will definitely renew their subscription in 2014, according to a major new survey.

Barry Dyett, managing director of HowDidiDo Media, which has found that at least 90% of UK golf club members will renew in 2014

A poll of nearly 2,500 club golfers by HowDidiDo, which holds handicap data on more than 1.3 million members of golf clubs, also found that just three per cent said they would definitely not be rejoining their club in 2014, with the remaining seven per cent undecided.

Lady members were slightly more likely to be undecided, the survey found.

The research is good news for golf clubs that have struggled with falling membership renewals in recent years – England’s approximately 2,000 golf clubs have collectively lost about 169,000 members in the last decade, which has resulted in several closing down.

Barry Dyett, HowDidiDo Media’s managing director, said: “It’s still early days, but these figures suggest something more than simply the green shoots of recovery in golf. While we’d all like to see a 100 per cent retention rate in golf club memberships that’s simply never going to happen for a number of disparate reasons, many of them personal and individual.

“If only three per cent of current members say they won’t renew their membership, that surely suggests that the industry is doing something right and augurs well for the future.”
