New golf director at The Belfry
5th March, 2013 by Tania Sansom
World-famous golf resort The Belfry has recruited industry veteran Ian Knox as its new director of golf, following the departure of previous post holder Gary Silcock.
Knox joins the four-time Ryder Cup hosting club with over 20 years’ experience in the hotel, leisure and golf resort industry, most recently as the director of golf at St Andrews Bay Golf Resort & Spa.
The Belfry, which last year was bought by an American private equity firm and returned to the De Vere Group’s portfolio after suffering serious financial problems, is due to undergo a £30 million refurbishment. Knox is looking forward to drawing on his previous experience to successfully oversee the project.
“I am thrilled to have this opportunity; The Belfry is one of the most iconic resorts in golf,” said Knox. “I’m sure the refurbishment will enhance the fantastic guest experiences that are available here for both golfers and non-golfers. The Belfry has a rich heritage as a decorated Ryder Cup venue and we have a fantastic opportunity to build on the existing foundations and establish the resort as one of Europe’s premium golf destinations.
“De Vere prides itself on delivering the highest levels of customer service and with the knowledge that I have gained throughout my career, I’m looking forward to bringing those industry-leading standards to The Belfry.”
The Belfry’s previous director of golf, Gary Silcock, has taken on the same role at Spain’s five-star La Manga Club. While Silcock was at the helm of The Belfry it won four accolades at the PGA-endorsed 59Club Awards including ‘Golf Operations Team of the Year’ and ‘Leading Individual Performance by a Golf Operations Team’.
Silcock said: “To be recognised as the leading golf operations team and best venue in any award category is a great honour. I enjoyed considerable success in my time at The Belfry and believe I can replicate those achievements at La Manga Club.”
