‘Act now, or we close in two years’12th November, 2012 by Tania Longmire
The president of a 99-year-old Welsh golf club has said that if his club does not act now it could close down within two years.
Milford Haven Golf Club has seen its membership fall by 50 per cent since 2007 and green fee income is 30 per cent lower in 2012 than it was in 2011. The club has debts of £600,000 which means it is struggling to pay staff their wages.
The situation has got so dire that club president Chris Davies has written to all members to warn that ‘the club would be a great loss to the community should it be forced to close’.
The letter stated that the club is offering to sell debentures, at £1,000 each, to existing members, and that it needs to increase membership by 50 per cent.
“The letter was intended to bring a hard and fast view point to members,” said Mr Davies.
“If we can increase membership by 50 per cent this will go a long way towards putting the club back on a sound financial footing.
“Money from members has assured the club’s financial future into the new year but now is the time for action or, in two to three years, the situation could be disastrous.”
