Durham club offers free coaching4th September, 2012 by Tania Longmire
A Durham golf club has announced that it is offering free coaching for beginners aged 16 and over.
Bishop Auckland Golf Club is making the offer to celebrate receiving a national award for its role in developing young golfers.
The club earned England Golf’s GolfMark award in May for its beginner and child-friendly approach to introducing new people to the sport.
The club has tried to make it as easy as possible for people of all ages to give golf a try by running taster sessions for both children and adults.
Free weekend coaching is available to juniors thanks to the club’s PGA professional Michael Pilgrim, who is also offering free coaching for adult beginners throughout September, in which clubs can be loaned.
Earlier this year the club even offered free membership to children aged under 11.
Bishop Auckland has built strong links with local schools as part of its drive to encourage newcomers into the sport and is looking to roll out a Tri Golf scheme for the area’s primary schools in the future. The club is also planning to build a new par three course.
Club member Anthea Rowntree was delighted the club’s efforts had been recognised.
“Receiving GolfMark is extremely rewarding for a dedicated team at Bishop Auckland who have invested a great deal of time and effort to meet the stringent standards required,” she said.
“Achieving GolfMark recognises the club provides a safe and organised environment where staff and volunteers are trained to support the needs of juniors and beginners of all ages.”
