A champion American amateur golfer has been charged with assaulting his caddie.
Rudolph Hermstadt, 37, is alleged to have attacked 41-year-old Jeremy Eterginio at East Mountain Golf Course in Connecticut, following accusations that the caddie had too close a relationship with Hermstadt’s fiancée.
Hermstadt will appear in Superior Court this week, following a charge of third degree assault. Police have said that he was captured on the golf club’s surveillance video choking and punching Eterginio.
The amateur golfer is won of the USA’s most successful non-professional golfers, having won the Waterbury Golf Championship a record seven times.
“The fight is believed to have severed Hermstadt’s and Eterginio’s working and personal relationship,” said a spokesman.
The attack, which police are calling ‘viscous’, has resulted in local authorities revoking Hermstadt’s playing privileges at two of his local area’s municipal golf courses on a temporary basis.
