The Golf Power List: 40-314th July, 2012 by admin
36. Bob Taylor, head of ecology at the STRI
If a golf course has an agronomic problem, often it will contact the STRI, which has a team of turfgrass scientists who can provide information to solve it. It is quite common that the solution will involve a more sustainable course management approach, and that’s where Bob, one of Europe’s most respected ecologists, comes in.
Bob is also leading the way in educating the non-golfing world about the ecological good that golf can do. He has, for example, appeared on the BBC’s Springwatch programme from various golf courses, showcasing the flora and fauna on display.
And while we’ve ranked him the 36th most powerful person in the British golf industry, he could be the most powerful person in the world. It has been predicted that without bees, which are in sharp decline in the UK, the human population could die out. Bob has addressed this by running ‘Operation Pollinator’ training, in which he has advised golf clubs about how to attract bees to their courses.
