Woburn Golf Club’s £3.5 million clubhouse refurbishment4th January, 2012 by Jenny Yu
Woburn Golf Club, one of the country’s most prestigious golfing venues, now has a clubhouse to match its three courses – which all feature in the Top 100 Golf Courses in England – following a £3.5m refurbishment that represents one of the biggest golf club projects in the UK in recent years.
Contractor Priory Gate focussed on the club’s operational needs and commitments, understanding that minimal disruption was essential throughout. Works were programmed to include three phases.
This phase summarily included demolition, strip out and refurbishment works, together with a new build extension to provide a new reception area and restaurant. The commercial kitchen was also replaced – a large-scale temporary kitchen installed – and toilet facilities were upgraded. The new reception has a striking visual impact on arrival from the car park, a stunning new glazed roof and features a magnificent antler chandelier. The pro shop also now opens onto a new walkway, facilitating easy access and maximising revenue opportunities.
Phase 2 works included the complete strip out and extensive internal alterations to create several new sitting and bar areas and an upstairs boardroom with views over the golf course. The fitting out of the new bars had to be completed to a tight programme to allow functions to take place.
A conference room named after Woburn’s touring professional, Ian Poulter, is provided downstairs.
Phase 3 works included the construction of a new extension to the function room in aluminium and glass together with enclosing an area previously exposed to the elements. Work included the provision of acoustic folding partitions and the completion of a glazed through walkway into the changing room areas. Ceilings were replaced throughout the building and external works included feature paving and landscaping.
Priory Gate’s Dave Curran is thrilled with the finished clubhouse: “Priory Gate is immensely proud to be associated with a club as prestigious as Woburn and we are delighted to have completed such an exciting and inspiring project.” The stunning development has been widely praised by Woburn’s members, visitors, staff and the wider golfing fraternity. Ian Poulter said: “It’s the final piece of the puzzle that turns Woburn into a truly world class facility.”
