Who is your Manager of the Year?
11th January, 2012 by Alistair Dunsmuir
The competition, which rewards one outstanding golf club manager or secretary with a holiday to Spain and recognises at least six for the good work they have done, sees Golf Club Managers’ Association (GCMA) members nominated by their members, staff and peers via this website or via HowDidiDo.
Nominees must have made some form of special contribution to their club; in recent years this has particularly been increasing revenue or members during the economic downturn.
Eaton Golf Club’s Peter Johns, winner of the 2010/11 competition, was chosen – by a panel of six independent golf club management experts - due to a raft of changes he brought in, which resulted in significant financial growth, even during the recession of 2009. Peter, who wanted to make Eaton appear attractive to non-golfers, brought the franchised catering operation in-house and used the improved bar and restaurant offerings to more than treble the club’s social membership category. In 2010, the club’s centenary, he even closed the course for a day in order to host a nature trail that saw considerable interest from the local community. He also brought in online tee time booking, improved communications with members and undertook a golf club management course at Bucks New University.
This year six shortlisted finalists will be treated to a day out at one of Britain’s premier golf clubs, while the winner will receive a holiday to Rioja in Spain, including a tour of vineyards and a round of golf.
The competition is sponsored by HowDidiDo, the largest online golf network in Europe, which manages over a million golfers’ handicaps, and Tonic Golf, which provides top of the range insurance solutions to golfers and golf clubs.
