Dewsbury District invests in junior golf

Dewsbury District Golf Club in Yorkshire is to use a pot of money its manager has won to visit local schools and introduce children to golf.
Mick Thorpe, who attended the Golf Club Managers’ Association (GCMA) conference at the end of last year, won £760 for his club’s junior section, after he successfully came closest to guessing the weight of a box full of airflow practice golf balls. There were 76 entries, each at £5 per entry, and the competition organiser, software provider Jonas ClubMinder, doubled the value of the £380 pot.
“We intend to put the money towards an open day in April, intended for families and juniors in particular,” said Mick. “We also intend to visit local schools to introduce them to golf and have already committed to supporting one local school with their advertising material to help raise awareness in the classroom and local area.”
Dewsbury District Golf Club currently has a junior section of 49 members, which it hopes to grow considerably.
The person whose guess was second closest was Dr Brian Smith from BRS Golf – the same man who won the ClubMninder raffle during the 2009 GCMA conference!
