Can a golf club change the terms of a bonus scheme?

8th January, 2012 by Brian Butler

Can the club unilaterally change the terms of a bonus scheme that is no longer achieving the extra revenue it was designed to deliver?

Answer: The definition of wages includes bonus payments, so if the club unilaterally changes the bonus scheme it could face a claim for unfair deduction from wages. The best way forward would be to consult the employees concerned and try to gain their consent. My advice to clubs considering bonus schemes is to qualify the scheme by adding ‘The club reserves the right to withdraw or change the terms of the scheme’.
