Clyne Golf Club manager dies suddenly

4th November, 2011 by Colin Victor

The manager of Clyne Golf Club in Wales, David Thomas, has died suddenly.

Thomas, 62, was a member of the Golf Club Managers’ Association (GCMA) since 2005 and formerly the manager of Neath Golf Club. He was a retired banker and a father of three.

“His death has come as a shock to all that knew him,” said Keith Lloyd, chief executive of the GCMA.

Clyne’s captain, Lt Col Steve Jenkins, added: “David was an immense character who did not suffer fools gladly but once you gained his respect was a firm ally and friend.

“He put his heart and soul into the club and will be sorely missed by us all. David was a highly respected and professional individual.

“He was diligent and meticulous in his work and oversaw a period of stabilisation and growth in the face of increasingly fierce competition for golf clubs across the whole of the UK.”

President of Neath Golf Club, Robert Arbourne, said: “David started off as treasurer with us and then became secretary and in fact he turned down the position of captain with us as he was secretary.

“He was very industrious and gave 100 per cent in everything he did.

“David was treasurer when I was captain at Neath and he was phenomenally helpful, he couldn’t do enough.

“He was very well known and well liked by everyone and it is very sad that he has passed away.”

The news comes just a few days after the announcement that John N Jones, former secretary of the Builth Wells Golf Club in Wales, died after a short illness, aged 66. He was also a member of the GCMA.
