Devon County Golf Union celebrates its centenary

26th October, 2011 by Jenny Yu

The Devon County Golf Union, the regional governing body for golf clubs in the county, is celebrating its 100th birthday today.

Set up on October 26, 1911 with the support of 19 clubs, six of which no longer exist, the not-for-profit organisation today supports 49 golf clubs in the county, particularly in the provision of junior programmes.

Keith Abraham, a former captain of Saunton Golf Club, has donated £25,000 towards the celebrations, which includes a dinner featuring speakers Anthony Abraham, president of the English Golf Union and Christopher Martin-Jenkins, radio broadcaster, tonight at the Riviera International Centre.
